About KURS

The art museums in the Zealand Region, KURS, comprise the KØS Museum of art in public spaces, Køge, Odsherred Art Museum, Asnæs, The Art Museum of West Zealand, Sorø, Museum of Contemporary Art, Roskilde and Fuglsang Kunstmuseum, Toreby, Lolland.

In recent years the art museums have been working towards a new collaboration platform called KURS (Kunstmuseerne i Region Sjælland – Art Museums in the Zealand Region), and with the exhibition project KURS: THE HARBOUR, THE HILL, THE LAKE, THE SQUARE, THE TREE, this collaboration manifests itself for the first time. The five exhibitions are independent, with individual themes, and reciprocally different with primarily contemporary artistic interpretations of the themes, but with a shared framework: The exhibitions all relate to the decentralized location that is the geographical setting for each of the museums – here creatively expressed through the themes: The Harbour, The Hill, The Lake, The Square and The Tree – all fixed and recognizable elements in the general landscape, but also specific in relation to the individual art museums, which have each chosen their own theme.

The exhibitions are tied together by a shortguide, which functions as a guide to the exhibitions and their locations in and outside the museums. The short guide is structured so that each museum has their own section with a brief introduction to the exhibition and a selection of the artists and works presented at the various exhibitions. A large part of the works are site specific and created for the current exhibitions, which is why several of the pieces will only be completed in the weeks leading up to the opening of the exhibition. This means that some works are depicted as models or sketches of the final pieces.

As well as the short guide, KURS has also established an interactive photo sharing site, www.myplace.kurs.dk, and the encyclopaedia Af Sted, which can be viewed as an overarching superstructure or a “sixth exhibition”.
